Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're going to tackle a common issue that many Excel users face - how to keep headings visible while scrolling through a large dataset. This is where the Freeze Panes feature comes in handy.

Let's say you have a massive amount of data in your worksheet, with headings in row 1 and labels in the left-hand column. As you scroll down, it's easy to lose track of which columns are which. This is where Freeze Panes comes in. By using this feature, you can freeze certain rows or columns so that they remain visible while scrolling through the rest of the data.

To use Freeze Panes, simply go to the View tab in Excel 2007 and select the Freeze Panes option. You'll see a drop-down menu with two new options - Freeze Top Row and Freeze First Column. If your data happens to be in the first row, you can use these options. However, in most cases, you'll need to manually select the row or column you want to freeze.

To do this, make sure the cell pointer is in the first cell that you want to remain unfrozen. For example, if you want to freeze everything above row 4, make sure the cell pointer is in A4. Then, go to the Freeze Panes option and select Freeze Panes. This will freeze everything above row 4, allowing you to scroll through the rest of the data without losing the headings.

But what if you want to freeze a column as well? In this case, make sure the cell pointer is in the first cell that is going to be non-frozen. For example, if you want to freeze everything above B4 and everything to the left of B4, make sure the cell pointer is in B4. Then, go to the Freeze Panes option and select Freeze Panes. This will freeze column A, allowing you to scroll to the right without losing the labels in column A.

One cool trick to note is that you can effectively remove a large title from the locked area by using the Freeze Panes feature. Simply use the down arrow to get to the first visible row in your worksheet (usually row 3), then go back to the cell you want to freeze and select Freeze Panes. This will remove the title from the locked area, while still keeping the important headings in row 3 visible.
