Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Take Control - Ranges Used for Each Icon in Excel Icon Set.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this video, we're going to tackle the challenge of analyzing massive amounts of data. How can we make sense of it all? Well, we'll show you how to use Pivot Tables to solve this problem.

This week, we're focusing on Excel 2007 and the Icon Sets under Conditional Formatting. Normally, when you choose an Icon Set, it will distribute the icons equally throughout the data set, breaking it into thirds. But what if you want more control over this? That's where the Manage Rules feature comes in.

To access Manage Rules, go to Conditional Formatting and select "Manage Rules". Here, you can choose the Icon Set that was previously set up and click "Edit Rule". This gives you absolute control over the icon distribution. You can choose to base it on a number rather than a percentage, and set your own ranges for the icons. For example, you can have the green checkmark for scores of 90 and above, the yellow icon for scores of 70 and above, and the red X for scores below 70. This is great for creating your own grading scale or any other type of analysis.

I really like how Excel allows you to quickly access an Icon Set, but also gives you the option to have more control over the distribution. It's a great balance between convenience and customization.
