McCallie School Shares Teaching Methods With Tea

The McCallie School has 110 years of experience educating young men. Which is why they want to share what they've learned with parents across America through the National Center for the Development of Boys. "If you look at how boys in our country are doing today, they're disengaging from school, receiving failing grades, dropping out. They're not achieving to their potential," says McCallie's headmaster, Lee Burns. Today, more women graduate from high school and enroll in college than men. The research institute will study how boys learn and teach this to other educators across the country. Researchers will study the current methods at McCallie and from there, make a lesson plan for parents and teachers. According to the school, hands-on, active learning is how they keep their students engaged. "They're not great listeners, they move ahead before instructions are fully given to them. As a result, they don't do very well in those settings that are static," says assistant headmaster, Kenny Sholl. They'll offer programs for parents to learn how to help their children. "We feel like there is a growing need to figure out what's going on with boys, and how we can bring out the best in them," says Burns. The center has been privately funded by donors.
