Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Turn Off In-Cell Editing & Edit Like a Pro in the Formula Bar!

Welcome back to another episode of the MrExcel netcast! In today's video, we're going to be discussing a common issue that many Excel users face - in-cell editing woes. Have you ever tried to edit a cell by pressing F2, only to have it overwrite the cell to the right? It can be frustrating and time-consuming, especially if you're trying to make quick edits to your formulas. But fear not, because there is a solution to this problem.

In this video, we'll be exploring a tip shared by one of our viewers, Tom from the UK. In a previous episode, we talked about the limitations of in-cell editing and how it can hinder our ability to make changes to our formulas. However, Tom pointed out that there is a way to turn off in-cell editing and edit directly in the formula bar instead. This not only prevents overwriting the adjacent cell, but it also allows us to easily select and format all the precedents on the current sheet.

To turn off in-cell editing, simply go to Tools, Options, and then click on the Edit tab. From there, uncheck the box next to "Edit directly in cell". This will change the behavior of the F2 key, making it edit the formula in the formula bar instead of the cell itself. While this may not be the preferred method for some, it's a great alternative for those who find in-cell editing to be a hindrance.

I personally have gotten used to in-cell editing and find it to be more efficient, but it's always good to know about different options and techniques in Excel.
