East Price Hill community farm to work with Guatemalan refugees

EAST PRICE HILL, Ohio (WKRC) - A community effort in East Price Hill to promote healthy eating will go international. The new community garden on Purcell Avenue will host a work session with a group of Guatemalan refugees Tuesday.

Turner Farm is the largest certified organic farm in Cincinnati. The farm in East Price Hill is currently in its first grow season.

The program director says the work session is a chance to provide a sense of community for many recent immigrants working hard to fit into a new culture. The work they'll be doing is crucial to a vulnerable population.

It'll be a true collaborative effort among the people working at the farm on a regular basis and the Guatemalan refugees who will join them. "It's been fantastic. They look forward to this," says Joshua Jones. "They tell me it's the favorite part of the week, it's my favorite part of the week because not only do I try to teach them, they teach me a lot because they've been growing food their entire lives, which is a little bit longer than I have. So, they've been teaching me methods, which is a really nice way to see how things are done on the other side of the world."

The effort brings together people who ordinarily wouldn't have a whole lot in common and uses food and farming as a bond. The result is something extraordinarily organic.
