Phillip Sear plays a Japanese-inspired piece from 1881 by the American organist and composer Charles J. Newman. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alas I have little information about the composer of this piece, other than that he was one of the leading organ teachers in Philadelphia, and an established recitalist (he gave an organ recital in Winnipeg in 1888). He died in 1902. This piece doesn't sound very Japanese (maybe more like Dvorak), and is probably the product of someone who had read about Japanese music but not heard any played live. However, it is significant in that it was written (copyrighted) in 1881 - four years before Gilbert & Sullivan's 'The Mikado' - which really aroused interest in Japanese culture - had its American premiere.
