Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast, where we tackle all your Excel problems and provide you with helpful tips and tricks. In today's episode, we're going to be discussing a common error that many Excel users encounter - Error 1049. This error can be frustrating and time-consuming to troubleshoot, but fear not, because I have a solution for you.

We start off with a massive amount of data and need to analyze it. The first thing we do is fire up a pivot table, but then we encounter the dreaded Error 1049. This is where our tip for today comes in, sent in by Emily. She has a great solution for tracing the source of the error, and it's a game-changer.

If you're not sure where the error is coming from, go to the Formulas tab and use the Evaluate Formula tool. This was available in Excel 2003 under Tools, Formula Editing, and Show Formula Editing Toolbar. Then, click on the magnifying glass on the right-hand side. This will allow you to watch the formula being calculated in slow motion, so you can pinpoint the exact reference that is causing the error.

Simply keep hitting the Evaluate button until you see one of the references change into an error. This will help you identify which part of the formula is causing the issue. In our example, it was the last term, C5, that was causing the DIV/0 error. This tip is especially useful for complex formulas with multiple references, as it allows you to easily identify the source of the error.
