Phillip Sear plays a somewhat Schubertian set of two waltzes (published in 1867) by the French composer Ferdinand de Croze (1828-1902).

Ferdinand de Croze Magnan was a French composer, pianist, and teacher born in Marseille. He gained recognition as a touring virtuoso and held the position of court pianist to the Duke of Parma. In the 1850s, he settled in Lyon where he taught and performed. His repertoire included works by Bach, Handel, Chopin, and Thalberg, and he also transcribed orchestral pieces for piano. His daughter Solange was a notable student of his.

Two waltzes by de Croze are featured in this recording. The interpretation of the first waltz is unclear - the score indicates repeating the first section (AAB), but the key change halfway through suggests that the composer intended for it to be played in the ABA format, as in the second waltz. This is how I have chosen to perform it.
