I'm out walking through one of the residential areas here in Vancouver, and I wanted to show you something I've been noticing more and more: houses that appear to be completely empty despite being worth millions of dollars.

It's Monday evening, around 5:30 PM, and this should be one of the busiest times of the day.

But look around.

No kids playing outside. Very few people around the houses. Some properties have landscapers arriving every couple of weeks simply to cut the grass and keep everything looking maintained.

I spoke with one landscaper working on a property and asked him about the house. According to him, he doesn't live there—the owners live in China, and he's hired to maintain the property.

I've had similar conversations with other maintenance workers around the neighbourhood.

Obviously, seeing an empty-looking house doesn't automatically prove that nobody lives there, and I'm not claiming every house on these streets is vacant. I'm documenting a pattern that I've been noticing and asking what it means for Vancouver.

If houses are increasingly being purchased primarily as investments rather than places for people to actually live, what happens to the community?

You can have beautiful multimillion-dollar houses, perfectly maintained lawns and quiet streets—but fewer neighbours, fewer families and fewer children outside.

At the same time, more condos and townhouses continue to be constructed.

I called about one nearby development just to find out what was happening with it, and I was told the units had sold extremely quickly. The question I'm asking is how many of these new properties are being purchased as actual homes versus investments for the future?

I'm going to continue walking different Vancouver streets and documenting what I see.

I'm not asking anyone to simply take my word for it.

Look at the neighbourhoods. Look at the activity. Ask questions and decide for yourself.
