Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Master Excel for Baseball Stats: Calculate ERA and Customize Display. Welcome back to another episode of the MrExcel netcast. Today, we have a special baseball-related topic in honor of opening day in the United States. As I was traveling through Ohio, I made a stop at the resting place of the legendary pitcher, Denton "Cy" Young. With an impressive record of 500 games won and a very low ERA, Young is considered to be the greatest pitcher in the history of the world. So, let's take a quick look at how we can use Excel to calculate ERA, one of the most popular statistics in baseball. First, we need to format our numbers to show fractions of thirds, as innings pitched are often presented in decimals. We can do this by going to Format Cells and selecting the Fraction tab. Then, we can choose to show the numbers in thirds and click OK. Next, we can use the formula for ERA, which is the number of earned runs multiplied by 9, divided by innings pitched. We can then format the result to show two decimal places, as is customary in baseball. Now, let's take a look at the career numbers for Cy Young. In his 874 major league games from 1890 to 1911, he pitched a total of 7354 and two thirds innings, with 2147 earned runs and an impressive ERA of 2.63. He also holds the record for 3 no-hitters and one perfect game, in which no man reached first base. It's safe to say that Young truly was the greatest pitcher of all time. As we celebrate the return of baseball, let's also take a moment to remember the incredible legacy of Cy Young. Thank you for tuning in to this netcast from MrExcel.
