CINCINNATI (WKRC) - There's a free program for breast cancer survivors and family members hosted by the UC Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Center. It's taken time and a supportive team, but June Stuckey now says a little more than a year out from her diagnosis of breast cancer that's she's doing well. She credits a team led by Dr. Elyse Lower and a program she attended called Beyond Breast Cancer with helping her get better. Beyond Breast Cancer is free and designed for anyone who has an interest in learning more about breast cancer or someone who has been through the experience. Part of the goal of this program is what they call empowerment, which can mean something different to everyone, but it basically means you are not bound by stereotypes. The program is giving away umbrellas along with a light lunch, and as part of the education there will be information about genetics, treatment strategies, information on new research and advice on how to be healthy after s breast cancer diagnosis. Stuckey says going beyond breast cancer means getting back to a healthier place. "In the beginning, I wasn't a good patient. I was going through a lot of the emotional -- in a state of denial," she said. The program is free and it's at the Kingsgate Marriott on UC's campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.
