Day 2 of hospitalization. Yesterday, the young Singaporean couple brought in the 17-year-old female spayed Shih Tzu for treatment as she had been vomiting green stuff and had diarrhoea for the past 2 days. Today, she looked good with little head shiviering. Her tongue is much pinker and she ate nearly a can of Prescription A/D diet.

During hospitalization to rehydrate the dog with IV drips, she did vomit 3 times but has now recovered due to medication. As to the cause of vomiting and diarrhoea, it is hard to eliminate kidney disease as a cause. Vomiting and diarrhea can be a sign of kidney disease too, not just gastroenteritis.  Sometimes it is due to pyometra but this dog has been spayed. 

This video is documented to share that a Shih Tzu in Singapore can live past 17 years if she is healthy and well cared for. Many dog owners ask me how long their senior dogs will live and I would say "15-20 years of age" if they are healthy and treated promptly if they are ill.
 
If this old dog is sick and the owner does not bother to bring her for veterinary treatment early, she would have died from dehydration. She goes home today to a loving home.

For kidney diseases, life can be prolonged feeding the dog a Science diet called Canine K/D diet. Many owners of old dogs do not get the dog checked for kidney disease with a blood test and so, they assume, vomiting is due to old age or food poisoning. Vomiting can be a sign of serious kidney disease. 

Spaying has prolonged this dog's life as she does not suffer from pyometra and has no breast cancer.
