Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Get Excel data into PowerPivot, with copy and paste, or you as a Linked Table.

Welcome to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing how to link tables with PowerPivot. This is an essential skill for any data analyst using Excel, and we will be using examples from our book, "PowerPivot for the Excel Data Analyst."

Tables are a powerful feature introduced in Excel 2007, but many users may not be familiar with them. They are especially useful when you have headings across the top and rows of data, which is often the case in spreadsheets. To declare a table, you can use the shortcut Ctrl+t or go to the Home tab and select "Format as Table." This will give you a table with the default name "Table1," but it's important to rename it to something more meaningful, such as "StoreInfo."

One of the main benefits of using tables is the filter dropdowns and formatting options that are automatically applied. But with PowerPivot, there are even more advantages. Instead of copying and pasting data into PowerPivot, we can create a linked table. This means that any changes made to the original table will automatically be updated in PowerPivot. This is especially useful when working with small lookup tables, like the one we have here for store information.

In this video, we will also show you how to update a linked table in PowerPivot. For example, if we need to change the region for a store from Atlanta to Arizona, we can simply update the table and all the data in PowerPivot will be updated as well. This saves time and ensures that our data is always accurate and up-to-date. So, if you have a simple Excel data set that you want to bring into PowerPivot, using a linked table is the way to go.
