Dr Puerini: So I'm a family doctor in a prison and I work here at Oregon State Correctional Institution, I've been doing this for 14 years and I'm just a regular, old day primary care physician. I do it full-time with different inmates.

Question: What personal benefits have you experienced from Transcendental Meditation?

Dr Puerini: Transcendental Meditation has been really helpful for me because it helps me to focus in on my life and be more aware of myself. It helps me be calmer, to be more sort of put together, present for the people in my day to day life. Present to myself I guess. I find myself doing everything just a little bit slower and that helps me a lot just to take my time to go about my business. It's very practical, it's not Earth shattering it's just day to day. The changes are subtle but I notice them and I've had people tell me they notice them and that's what's important.

Question: How does Transcendental Meditation benefit the inmates?

As the medical director here, I'm invested in the health of my patients. I'd think that Transcendental Meditation could definitely help my patients who suffer from a wide variety of things from high blood pressure to Crohn's disease to chronic pain. I think there is a strong potential for benefitting real people here on the ground and the bottom line being that if we've got them focussed on taking good care of their bodies because these guys have not taken good care of their bodies. If Transcendental Meditation helps with that them I'm all in favor.
