Bobtail conversions are becoming more popular these days, performed by specialist companies and individuals alike. The mods dramatically change the appearance of the bike and can transform a dated old Jap cruiser into a cool, appealing stead.

As a WoF inspector I have seen a wide range come through the workshop over the past few years. Some really good conversions, others, truly, not so good.

This is the first time I have been asked to modify a bike frame, in the first video #2002 I really just cut bits off & plug up the frame, but in this video I'm fabricating a new seat mount to accommodate the small, low cut bobtail style seat. 

Others dramatically modify the geometry, cutting & lowering parts of the frame, lengthening swing arms and even altering the angle of the forks too.

Whatever you decide to do, my suggestion is to check out what's involved first. Here in New Zealand any modifications to a vehicle's chassis will require an inspection by a certified Engineer & these don't come cheap.  Make sure who ever's doing the welding knows how to do a good job too because if its not up to scratch then you'll have it all to do again!

So this video really is just aimed at giving you an insight into where I cut the frame on this cruiser & how I plugged up the open frame tubes. Its important to keep the structural integrity of the frame whilst at the same time attempting to adhere to the 'vision' of the rider too...
