Judge says Cincinnati can't impose tax on billboards

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A Hamilton County judge halted Cincinnati's plan to tax billboard advertising in hopes of bringing in $700,000 a year. Norton Outdoor Advertising has since sued the city. City Council approved an ordinance requiring a tax to help cover the budget shortfall. On Monday afternoon, a judge granted a temporary injunction to the companies that are opposed to the tax. Opponents say the tax violates the First Amendment. There will be a hearing in September to determine if the tax can stay or go. If the billboard companies win the case, City Council will have to figure out where else to get that money or make cuts to spending.
