Covington's Point Perk provides jobs for those with special needs

COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - A coffee shop in Covington is serving up a lot more than lattes, it's providing jobs for those who may sometimes get overlooked.

Mary Ellen Cann has been working at the coffee shop Point Perk for three years, helping to fill the machines with beans for the next customer.

She says working at the coffee shop is like everywhere else. The job helps her grow, helps with team work and builds employable skills.

The coffee shop is owned by a non-profit called The Point. Its mission is dedicated to helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Three others like Mary Ellen work at the coffee shop

"Cash register use to be right here and the salad bar use to be right here," said Mary Ellen.

Mary Ellen's customer service skills show this isn't her first time in a kitchen. She worked in this same spot back when The Point owned a restaurant. "Helps me grow and everything. Everyone is friendly and nice," said Mary Ellen.

In her 30 plus years, participating in The Point functions, Mary Ellen has made a few friends. The non-profit holds events for more than 1,500 individuals in its programs.

"I'm friendly with everybody because I’m not shy or nothing like that," said Mary Ellen.

The Point received a grant for the coffee shop. It's planning to redo a part of the space to give it more of a coffee shop vibe.

If you’re interested in helping The Point with donations, the non-profit is holding an event at the DCCH’s historic barn in Fort Mitchell. The event is expected to be a fun-filled evening with live music, food trucks, and beer. All the proceeds will go to The Point. Tickets before the event are $30. At the door will be $40. The event is set for Saturday, September 29th.
