The male blue grosbeak is a bird of ravishing beauty. I caught limited footage of this individual out in the tall dead grasses next to a riparian habitat. It has a powerful beak like a finch for cracking seeds, but has a more slender, longer build. The blue grosbeak feeds on insects, spiders, gastropods, and fruits in addition to seeds. These birds typically weigh 25-32 grams and have a clutch size of 3-5 eggs that incubate for 11-12 days. The scientific name of this stunning bird is Passerina caerulea. The blue grosbeak is a migratory bird that goes south to Central America and northern South America. It comes to the southern states of the United States of America to nest, typically building nesting sites 1-3 meters off the ground in partially open woodlands on the border between trees/thicket and open grassland.
