Crayfish Scores a Big Lunch

Excuse the constant refocusing in the beginning of the video...I put my camera video settings on auto-refocus because I thought the crayfish, which had just appeared in my view, was going to be moving fast all over the place, but it chose not too. That's the last time I ever use auto-refocus.

I was looking at schools of baby fish when I saw this red crayfish come out of the deep shadows with half of a juvenile fish in its claws! It was a very impressive score for lunch indeed. How it got such a score will remain a mystery. I think the bigger fish stay in the deeper waters, or possibly where the creek connects into this giant cesspool under the road overpass. If you skip to 4:28 in the video you can see the artificial underground environment this crayfish lives in.

In any case, I had greatly underestimated the speed and cunning of the crayfish. It is capable, from what I've seen, of bursts of speed and knows its offense and defense well. As I've shown in previous videos, they exist in large numbers in every cesspool I've seen, so they must be doing lots of things right; in fact, there are crayfish species all over the world. It is said that crayfish are intolerant of pollution, so whatever runoff from the road above must not be enough to kill them. This specimen is a dark red and seems different from the other ones I've seen nearby, being even more lobster-like in appearance. Perhaps it is a different species of crayfish, or it has had its last molt and has an old, mature final exoskeleton.
