A brush rabbit stayed motionless against the cattails while I was scanning the horizon and trees above for novel birds and dragonflies. It wasn't until the brush rabbit started eating that I noticed it, and that it was eating in a standing position to access taller grasses. While I was watching the rabbit eat, I heard the beautiful melodies of song sparrows on the cattails above. I had no idea how to tell one sparrow species from another, but this is the first one I identified by sound. The ones featured in this video are of the gouldii subspecies. Song sparrows sing to declare their territory and attract females. They learn their songs from the other male song sparrows in the vicinity.
