The California wild grape is a deciduous vine that grows generally in riparian habitats, although this riparian habitat had long dried out over the summer. It grows up to 10 meters long and climbs the trees and rocks nearby, just like any other vine would, slowly choking the trees of needed sunlight over time. It became apparent to me what this was once I noticed the little developing green grapes on the vines! You may have seen this on the cliffs alongside the I-5 freeway going north of Los Angeles entering Central Valley; that little microclimate is well-shaded and no doubt collects all of the scant rainwater that drains down the cliff sides during the rainy season.
