The electric starter, automatic transmission, radial tires, and electronic fuel injection are considered the greatest advancements in automotive innovation in the 20th century. The turbocharger increases the power output of an internal combustion engine regardless of whether it's a gas or diesel engine.

The turbocharger is not parasitic, like the supercharger. In other words, it uses the exhaust gases--a waste product--to drive the turbine the ram forces air into the engine. By ram forcing air into the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, it increase the fuel to air mixture and thus the explosion that force the piston down possesses more kinetic energy.

Because the turbocharger works on exhaust gases, it is extremely hot! Thus, the air being forced into the engine is hot, and to cool the air before it enters the combustion chamber, most turbocharged engines are fitted with an intercooler.

Turbochargers are susceptible to damage owing to their supersonic speeds. These devices can spin in excess of 75,000 revolutions per minute. And because of these, the shafts spin on ceramic bushings that are constantly supplied with oil.
