Route planning & trip planning are one & the same. And this task is made easier with GPS & Google maps software, to name a few.  However, Google maps and other map software are designed for cars and light trucks. Know that it's going to take longer in a commercial vehicle.

Especially if the vehicle is heavily loaded--Super 'Bs", tridem trailer, or fully loaded tandem-tandem--or your route takes you through mountainous terrain.

And during your trip plan, you will have to budget time for loading, unloading, fuelling, hours of service regulations, and going into the scale house or getting pulled over by authorities. Finally, you will need a buffer of time for unexpected delays such as traffic, weather, crashes, breakdowns etc.
