Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Frequency Distribution in Excel: Formula vs. Pivot Table | Dueling Excel. Welcome to another dueling Excel podcast! I'm Bill Jelen from MrExcel and I'm here with Mike Girvin from Excel Is Fun. Today, we're going to show you how to create a frequency distribution in Excel. Mike will demonstrate some formula methods and I'll show you an easy way to do it using a pivot table. So, what exactly is a frequency distribution? It's a way to group data and count the number of occurrences within each group. For example, if we have a set of values and we want to group them into categories of 5, we can use a frequency distribution to see how many values fall into each category. Mike will start us off by using the frequency function. This function requires us to specify the upper limit for each category, and then it will count the number of values that fall within that range. However, we can also use other formulas like SUMPRODUCT or COUNTIFS to create a frequency distribution when the upper limit is not included. But, if you're looking for a simpler and more efficient way to create a frequency distribution, I'll show you how to do it using a pivot table. By inserting a table and grouping the data by 5 unit increments, we can easily see the frequency of values in each category without having to use any formulas. So, whether you prefer using formulas or pivot tables, we've got you covered with different methods to create a frequency distribution in Excel.
