MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) In the District 2 race, five candidates are on the ballot. Lakeshia Dotson, Levon Manzie, Florance McElroy, Karlos Turner and Greg Vaughan are all candidates for the seat which covers downtown and midtown Mobile. The candidates stayed busy Tuesday, shaking hands, waving signs and travelling poll to poll on Tuesday, fighting for votes.Candidate Lakeshia Dotson is working on her PhD in Public Policy. She ran for the seat without success in 2009, but has confidence this time around. The first thing I would really like to concentrate on is the blight and infrastructure. And I want to work on more recreational programs for our seniors and our youth in community centers, said Dotson.Karlos Turner is a physical therapist. He has a passion for service and his community. We need to work on the communication. I think if we work on that it will help reduce a lot of problems in this community, said Turner.Candidate Greg Vaughan is a civil lawyer in Mobile. He's most concerned about crime in midtown.I don't think District 2 has had a strong advocate for crime reduction at City Hall and it's my opinion that a lot of residents in midtown feel like they've been left out in the dark, said Vaughan.Levon Manzie currently serves on the Mobile County School Board, but wants to make the switch into city politics.I see many of the issues that plague our schools start in our communities. I want to be a part of eradicating that cycle. I want to make sure that those that graduate from our schools have economic and employment opportunities, Manzie said.Candidate Florance McElroy is a business owner. The main thing I want to do is make the community responsible for ourselves. I want to be the leader that says, hey, we know what the problems are but what's the action plan? Not just the council but the council and the people together, said McElroy. The candidates are all looking to fill the seat most recently occupied by William Carroll. He announced over the summer that he was stepping down to pursue other career opportunities.
