'Nothing Obvious' in Fowl River Death

Theodore Ala. (WPMI) Investigators are waiting on the autopsy results of an elderly man found dead in his pickup truck, fully submerged in Fowl River near a fish camp boat launch. Nothing obvious at this time, Sgt. Robbie Riddick told Local 15, when asked if they suspected foul play. 77-year-old Clarence Rutherford had just moved back from Mississippi to Memories Fish Camp on Wednesday, where he had stayed off and on for 29 years. He was staying in a camper with his son about thirty yards away from the boat launch. All his old friends came and seen him on Friday evening, Charlotte Puckett, a friend and owner of the fish camp, told Local 15. He was in good spirits...He told us we'd see him the next morning. At some point that night, after telling friends he was going to sleep, Rurherford and his pickup truck vanished. On Saturday morning, Rutherford's son reported seeing personal items that were in the back of his father's pickup truck, including a shop vac and gas can, floating in the river. Searchers came up empty handed Saturday, but divers returned Sunday morning and found Rutherford's Ford F-250 in 15 feet of water right off the boat launch with Rutherford inside. Investigators hope to get the autopsy results back this Tuesday. While investigators said family members had told them Rutherford showed some signs of dementia, friends of Rutherford who did not want to be named told Local 15 that it didn't add up and that they were very suspicious that something malicious had happened.
