MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) The Mobile County Probate Court is warning people of a possible scam. Judge Don Davis says at least one senior citizen received a letter in the mail requesting money for a service the court does for free.Exiedean Thomas, 83, received a letter last week saying she could get a copy of her deed for $83. Thomas says she knew better than to pay it.You won't get no money from me, said Thomas. The main thing we want citizens to know: We're not involved in this, said Davis.Davis says the very official looking letter tells people they are being charged for a copy of their deed. The interesting aspect of this, is that this document is available through our internet website at no expense, said Davis. The letter looks like a bill and even lists a compliance response date. And it says deed processing notice, said Davis. We called the Record Transfer Service Company for an explanation. Why would they pay really high fees, $80 to get something that's free? asked Local 15's Andrea Ramey. Well, the service is basically letting you know there was a change made and a lot of people, some are out of the state, have a property out of state and it's not easy for them to go down to the county. So in that case, our company is there to help, the operator replied.Thomas doesn't see it as a service. She believes it's a scam and has a few words for the people in Delaware who sent it: You need to get a better scam than this, not taking money from innocent people. The company says it is not a scam and discloses on the letter that is not a government agency.
