MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Congressional candidate Quin Hillyer doesn't support gay marriage, but he also doesn't support expelling Republican party members who do. This is not the Soviet system, Hillyer told Local 15. It's not about stomping someone down with the party's boot if they disagree with you on one subject. That's the reason, Hillyer said, he wasn't going to sign fellow candidate Dean Young's Pledge Against Gay Marriage. Young, an Orange Beach businessman, e-mailed the pledge out to the other eight candidates running for outgoing Representative Jo Bonner's seat. I'm against homosexuals pretending like they're married, Young told Local 15 on Wednesday. With this pledge, we're saying in one voice, whoever our next Congressman is, will go up [to Washington] and do something. By signing the pledge, candidates agree to actively oppose same-sex marriage and support a by-law change to expel any member of the Republican Executive Committee who opposes the party position by supporting gay marriage. If you want homosexuals pretending like they're married, you need to go to the Democrat party, because that's the party that welcomes that kind of lifestyle, Young said. Hillyer said removing people who disagree with one issue on the party's platform hearkens back to the Cold War Communist Party in the Soviet Union. Hillyer said rhetoric like that would scare away younger voters, which the Republican party is trying to attract. You can stand for traditional marriage without sounding like the Soviet Politburo, Hillyer said.
