MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A Georgia man is in Mobile sharing a very personal message, after his son died last year after smoking synthetic marijuana.Instead of shutting down after his loss, Lance Dyer committed his life to informing other parents about just how dangerous the drug can be.Spice is now illegal, but it's certainly still easily obtainable.Sheriffs deputies said Thursday that even cocaine dealers are switching to selling synthetic marijuana, because it's in such high demand and it's highly addictive. But it's known to have bizarre effects on users, often causing hallucinations and psychotic, violent behavior.Fourteen-year old Dakota Dyer was his father's pride and joy. He was a star student, starting defensive end on the football team and active in the community. His life was picture perfect until he took synthetic marijuana, otherwise known as spice.On March 8 of last year, my son was contacted by two of his friends on Facebook. They told him you should try the new legal weed that's out. He said no seven times. Finally, he said maybe. They said, I'll hook you up with our man, said Lance Dyer.The man who contacted his son was a 31-year-old convicted felon, who was out on parole in Georgia.His exact words were 'I have that hot legal bud on deck,' said Dyer, describing what he and his wife found after their sons death while searching Facebook and text messages.Dyer remembers the last moments he spent with his only son.We sat in our house. We had dinner. We had cookies and milk discussing what we were going to do Saturday, said Dyer.Little did he know that Saturday would be the last day he'd see his son alive.Sometime after 9:30 on March 10, my son made a series of horrible decisions. My son smoked a synthetic cannabinoid. His last text was at 11:46 and it looked like a code, it made no sense, Dyer added. Twenty six minutes later I found my son in the middle of our house with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.The Dyers now join the growing ranks of families whose children have died or suffered physical harm after using some form of synthetic marijuana. Dyer calls it poison. I was there the day my son drew his first breath. I literally held him in my arms as he drew his last.
