MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A high school student was arrested Thursday after police say he brought a loaded handgun to Williamson High School. The 16-year-old was taken to Strickland Youth Center and charged with having a pistol without a permit and a felony charge of altering the identification number of a firearm.Officials say a teacher found the weapon, after the student dropped it on the floor in the hallway. That's when school officials immediately called police. When someone brings a gun to school, word spreads quickly among fellow students. But their reaction may surprise you.‚“I wasn't scared. I mean, someone must have messed with him,‚ said one 11th grader at Williamson.‚“I think if a child feels protected, they won't need to bring a gun to school,‚ said Williamson senior Jamichael Davis.Police wouldn't say why the student brought the weapon.‚“Those are all things that will be between the detective and the juvenile, the things that they've discussed. But one thing for sure we can pass on is that he did not bring that gun to school with the intent of hurting someone at the school,‚ said Mobile police spokesperson Cpl. Chris Levy.‚“People don't too much bring guns to Williamson,‚ said Jamichael Davis. He said while it may be an uncommon occurrence, he understands why some kids may feel the need to arm themselves.‚“You'll have people come to your school and try and fight you at the school. And by the time the police get there you could be shot, stabbed, killed or anything,‚ said Davis.Police say often times, the root of the problem starts at home.‚“When it comes to safety, privacy is not an issue. There is no reason why a parent shouldn't be able to go to a child and say 'hey, let me see what's in your book bag.' Go through it before they go to school. That should be basic parenting. You bought them that back pack anyway,‚ said Cpl. Levy.Police are still investigating how the teen got a hold of the gun. The student tells police he found it awhile back, somewhere near Government Street and Washington Avenue.
