110 miles! That's how far Diana Nyad swam to get from Cuba to Key West, Florida. That is the equivalent of swimming I-10 from Mobile to the Louisiana state line! And she did it at age 64, an age when most people are thinking about retirement. So what does Diana have that maybe you don't have?Well, to find out, you may have to talk to a swimmer like Ce Marshall. It's a huge accomplishment, she said.At age 55, Marshall is about 10 years younger than Nyad, but says she feels decades younger because she swims... alot. In fact, she teaches swimming and endurance at Mobile's Alpine Swim Club. She says your mind must control your body and not the other way around. It's got to keep you going when your arms are burning and your lungs are tried and you feel like you can't take another stroke, said Marshall. It's all up here. It's the mental aspect.I've been at that stage where I was, like, should I just quit? said swim club supporter Preston Howard. He's taken part in many of the club's 200 lap shark frenzy events. When we're almost there, we just give that extra push, he said. You get that drive and it's over before we know it.And that extra push often comes from a conversation swimmers have with... themselves!Swimmer Anna Nelson gets it.You just keep going, she said. Don't give up! You've got to reach your goal.Alpine Swim Club member John David Faralli agrees.Mostly just the same thing, he concured. If I get tired I'll just turn on my back and do the elementary backstroke. I find that stroke really relaxing to doAnd relaxing is just what Diana Nyad will be doing for a while, said Marshall. She won't be able to pick her arms up very easily tonight, though!
