Top 10 Largest Animals in the World

Number 10: Saltwater Crocodile

Saltwater crocodiles are the largest living reptiles weighing on average an impressive 2,000 lbs . They eat everything from rodents to deer and have been known to snatch a tiger or two. ‘Death rolling’ is the process by which the crocodile can consume larger prey, it spins until the meat rips off.

Number 9: Black Rhino

 The black rhino is considered ‘critically endangered’. Sadly, several subspecies have already been declared extinct. The average weight of an adult is between 1,800-3,000 lbs, with several males having been reported to weigh in at over 6,000 lbs!

 Number 8: Walrus

The average weight of a walrus ranges anywhere between 1,500-3,800 lbs. The tusks of a walrus are actually long canine teeth that are used for defense, fighting, and stability, perfect for climbing in and out of the water. 

Number 7: Giraffe

An average weight of an adult falls between 1,800-2,800 lbs and it can grow to nearly 20 ft! The word giraffe is an Arabic translation, meaning ‘fast-walker’. Giraffes reach speeds upwards of 35 mph. 

Number 6: Gaur

Indian bison, another name for the gaur. The gaur is similar to the water buffalo, but the gaur is taller, and less aggressive. The average weight of an adult is 2,200 lbs. Due to their size they have few enemies besides people. 

Number 5: Hippopotamus

Male hippos weigh nearly 3,300 lbs, and females weigh only 200-300 lbs less than their counterparts. Hippos are social, traveling in herds of 20+. The food staple for a hippo is grass and a hippo eats a lot of it! They consume over 150 lbs of grass a day. 

Number 4: White Rhinoceros

The white rhino is the largest species of rhino weighing on average between 3,700-5,200 lbs. The difference between the black and white rhino isn’t actually color at all, but the shape of their mouth. The white rhino has a wide mouth and the black rhino has a narrow mouth.

Number 3: Asian Elephant

Coming in at #3, the Asian elephant's average weight of 9,200 lbs is smaller than its African cousin. It is, however, the largest land animal on the Asian continent. They're an endangered species due to destruction of habitat and poaching.

Number 2:  African Elephant

At birth the African elephant weighs an average of 220 lbs. Fully grown it can weigh more than 22,000 lbs. It is the largest living animal to walk on land. The African elephant is an endangered species. Poaching and loss of habitat are their biggest threats. 

Number 1:  

The animal that holds the record for being the largest animal on planet Earth is the blue whale. The blue whale can surpass 100 ft in length and weigh 500,000 lbs. The heart of a blue whale is the size of a Ford Taurus! Even though we can't hear them with our human ears, the blue whale also holds the title for the loudest animal, reaching a jaw-dropping 180 dB (a shotgun blast registers around 165dB!). They are majestic, graceful creatures that are still recovering from the poaching of the 1900s which brought them to near extinction. They are currently on the endangered species list and their numbers are slowly recovering. There are approximately 25,000 blue whales in the world today.
