Should Men Do Yoga? Hells Yeah and Here Is Why:

So… this question comes up a LOT and can seem like a confusing one, especially for men who seem to have enough time on their hands after work, to binge drink or take their kids to a football practice, but not enough time to do yoga. The thought that yoga is only for women is a myth, since any human body, regardless of sex, can suffer from a stiff shoulder or a pulled muscle. It’s just foolish to think that one person should be mobile but another person should not based on their gender alone.

Go into a popular local yoga class, you may find it stuffed with about 55-60 people, but the amount of men may be close to zero. The view that yoga is a women’s practice is essentially a combination of lack of education as well as a gender bias in western culture. Since people do yoga for strength and flexibility--and without the necessary strength, you won’t be able to get up off the toilet or out of your wheelchair when you’re older. Even worse is just being someone that is always “too tired to do anything”. You don’t want to have to rely on others to do your daily chores, or perhaps assist you when nature calls (aka, having to take a sh*t).

Treat your body like a machine!

Even though the dynamics society have changed, especially now when men and women are both working and providing for the family “unit”, the world is still pretty much, male dominant! This means that worldwide, men are employed in the majority of the jobs or other physical work. Sitting behind the desk all day, crunching numbers or spending time on the couch after returning home may SEEM to be the ideal way to spend time after a stressful workweek, but this affects posture and creates compounded tension and stress in the future. Even after such a workday, most people continue to mash the keyboard at home for entertainment or a private business.

We need to respect our bodies and physically educate our muscles by providing time for yoga, which helps with joint lubrication, range of motion, in addition to psychological benefits of relaxation and clarity. Most men feel that yoga is not a sufficient workout and that it is just a bunch of “oms and meditation” or that it requires you to turn into a pretzel. There is no need to feel “good” or “bad” in yoga, it is simply a practice in which you take your body through a restorative journey. Essentially training the body to work with the brain again, and not segregate the two.

Another perpetuated myth, “men are not built for yoga”, comes from that same thought of not being flexible enough. That there is a way to “excel” in yoga, is a fundamentally incorrect approach to the practice. You focus on the present moment and what your capacity is TODAY. Quite the opposite of comparing your ability to that of others. Most men (most people in fact) are imbalanced as a result of repetitive movement patterns such as sitting down too often, or slouching, etc. Addressing daily habits with a yoga practice would help men of all ages improve posture and mobility.
