Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Use the Macro Recorder to Record Fill Down in Excel.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we will be discussing one of my favorite Excel features - the double click fill handle. However, have you ever tried to record this action using the Macro Recorder? If so, you may have noticed that it doesn't work as expected. But don't worry, in this video, we will show you how to use the Macro Recorder to successfully record the fill down action.

First, we will demonstrate the issue by recording a macro and attempting to use it on a larger data set. As you will see, the macro only records the action of copying down to the remaining records in the first day. This is not very useful, but we will show you a solution.

Next, we will try a different approach by turning off the Relative Reference initially and then using the Ctrl+down arrow and Ctrl+right arrow shortcuts to select the cells we want to copy down to. We will also introduce another handy shortcut - Ctrl+D, which is a shortcut for fill down. This method may seem like more work, but the advantage is that it will work no matter how many records there are.

So, if you're trying to record a macro and use the fill down feature, it is possible but you have to be in Absolute mode to enter the heading and first formula, and then switch to Relative mode to select the cells and use the Ctrl+D shortcut. This may seem like a lot of steps, but it will save you time in the long run.
