Doctor says beginning mammograms at 40 key to early breast cancer detection

MONTGOMERY, Ohio (WKRC) - Health care providers in the Tri-State are kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a reminder about the importance of early detection, especially when it comes to younger women. Health care providers at Bethesda North Hospital want to remind everyone that annual mammograms are critical for early detection. Dr. Susan Weinberg is a radiologist who says when it comes to mammography, early detection is still key. She says screening mammography begins at 40. Dr. Weinberg also says mammograms are the only way to pick up triple negative cancer, which needs to be detected as early as possible to be effectively treated. There are insurance concerns with screening at younger ages. Dr. Weinberg and her team say they do work with patients who need help with coverage and raise funds when there are fees women can't afford.
