On December 4th, 2015, AYO (Aboriginal Youth Opportunities) honoured the honorable Justice Murray Sinclair during 'Meet Me At The Bell Tower' on Selkirk Avenue in Winnipeg. Josh Sigurdson of WAM was able to speak with him about the horrors of the CFS (Child and Family Services) system in Manitoba and the obvious push to take First Nations children.
Murray Sinclair was the first indigenous lawyer in Manitoba and has been working hard as the chair of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In short, Murray Sinclair's a Manitoba legend and we at WAM have used references by him for quite a while regarding the TRC and the Indian Act.
With former Attorney General Alvin Mackling claiming CFS is corrupted and Grand Chief Derek Nepinak saying that children are a commodity in Manitoba, it was crucial that we got the word of Murray Sinclair.
It is indeed fact that there are 11,000 children in CFS care in Manitoba. 90% of them are First Nations. Only 11.1% of the province's population is First Nations. There is money being made on each child apprehended. Extra money is made when the child is diagnosed with an illness and medicated. The abuse rates are incredibly disturbing and parents who speak out about their children being taken away are threatened that they'll never see their children again if they continue.
Something else we spoke with Murray Sinclair about was 'The Indian Act' which still in 2015 claims First Nations people are savages. It was signed in 1876 and basically signs away right to self govern or be sovereign and that first nations people must be controlled by the government and the Queen.
This has led to dramatic problems within the First Nations communities for nearly 140 years.

Murray Sinclair made the point,
"We don't need legislation that defines who's an Indian. We don't need legislation that defines who's a Metis. We don't need legislation of that kind because those aspects of the legislation were really there in order to allow the government to be able to escape from its responsibilities and we're no longer going to be able to talk about that."

We hope to speak with Murray Sinclair in the near future. A very very interesting person to talk to!

Big thanks to Michael Champagne and of course Christopher Clacio for making us aware of the event!
