Phillip Sear plays 'A young maiden's dream' by the Czech composer Franz Bendel (1833-74). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Franz Bendel (1833-74) was a Czech pupil of Liszt in Weimar, who later taught in Berlin (where he eventually died of typhus), and also travelled as a pianist and conductor to America. Bendel was a skilled pasticheur (and produced very able imitations of the styles of Mozart and Haydn). He was also perhaps the only composer able to assimilate the style of Liszt, and even produce pieces that could be mistaken for those of the master. Appraisal of Bendel's oeuvre is difficult, since so few of his works seem to be available. This beautiful piece comes from an American anthology and seems to be without opus number, so I am not sure when it was written. Note how the maiden sinks back into deep sleep at the end of the piece!
