A 22-year-old woman and 26-year-old man are dead after a crash on Brainerd Road. Police say the driver was speeding when her car left the road near the Holiday Bowl, hit a sign, and caught fire. Officers tried to get Antoniece Padgett and Antonio Marbury out of the car but were unable to save them. ____ A family of five is dead after a house fire in Jackson County Alabama. Carolyn Quarles, Kim Alexander, Tony Alexander, and two girls, 8-year-old Brianne and 6-year-old Emily, all died in the blaze. Authorities believe the family was sleeping when the fire started Saturday in Bryant. A gas heater is believed to have played a role, although the official cause remains under investigation. _____ A Dalton mom faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of her 17-month-old daughter. 21-year-old Catarina Moran is also charged with cruelty to children and identity fraud. The girl was found dead at a home on Whitener Drive. The exact cause of death is unknown. The body has been sent for an autopsy. _____ A 25-year-old Etowah man is dead after a crash on Interstate 75 near Cleveland Saturday. Police say another vehicle may have bumped Robert Arruda’s SUV, which plowed across the median and into the path of a tractor trailer. The tractor trailer driver was uninjured. _____ Chattanooga police say a man was almost stabbed to death after giving someone a ride home from KFC. Authorities say 53-year-old Nathan Pearson gave Ferris Witcher a ride home, but Witcher demanded money. Pearson was reportedly stabbed in the face, neck and chest. Witcher was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder. ____ A 15-year-old basketball player allegedly raped by his teammates may have warned coaches about abuse. The assault took place days before Christmas while the Ooltewah team was staying at a cabin in Gatlinburg. The freshman was seriously injured when a pool cue was forced inside him and broke inside. He was rushed to the hospital with a ruptured colon and bladder and is now recovering. Three students are charged with aggravated rape and assault. All are minors and have been dismissed from the team. ____ A 46-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash on APD-40 on New Year’s Eve. Police believe alcohol and speed may have played a role in the death of Cleveland resident Charles Braddam. ____ The body of a man found at a Soddy-Daisy cemetery has been identified as 51-year-old Tony Rector from Marion County. Police have ruled the death a homicide. No arrest has been made. ____ Tennesseans will now be able to renew their driver’s license every eight years instead of every five years. The new law goes into effect today. It’s expected to cut wait times at service centers. The change includes all classifications of licenses. ____ A woman was taken to the hospital after a hang-gliding accident on Lookout Mountain. Authorities say the victim crashed not far from the launch point in Dade County. Her condition is unknown. ____ A 13-year-old girl has died after police say a driver crashed into the horse-drawn buggy she was riding in in Polk County. Authorities say 28-year-old Jason Shelton was driving under the influence and will be charged with vehicular homicide. He allegedly attempted to leave the scene. ____ Lee University student Jordan Smith is engaged. Smith recently won season nine of The Voice on NBC. He rang in the new year with a proposal to his girlfriend of three years, Kristen Denny. ____ The Book Rack is closing its store on Dayton Boulevard in Red Bank. Owner Helen Aiken believes the 40-year-old store is the oldest in the area. She says the store was killed by e-books. _____ State Senator Bo Watson says he won’t challenge U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann in 2016. Weston Wamp has also said he will not challenge Fleischmann this year.
