The British violinist, composer, and conductor Ignatius de Orellana (1860–1931) was born in Jersey (his grandfather was a Spanish immigrant). He studied violin in London, and wrote a few piano pieces and chamber works in the late 1880s-early 1890s, but then became a leader, and later conductor of theatre orchestras. He turned his hand to orchestration and worked on many of the most successful musical comedies in London in the early years of the 20th century. Among other achievements, he wrote the overture to Noel Coward's 1929 'Bitter Sweet' (a show in which the division of compositional labour between Coward and his pianist collaborator Elsie April has always been a controversial subject). The set of studies from which the piece comes was reviewed quite favourably in 'The Times' in December 1890. This gentle study in thirds has the feel of a Mendelssohn Venetian gondola song, with maybe a touch of Reinecke in the harmonies.
