Light the Bridge is a $3 million project involving an LED light system on the High Level Bridge funded by Epcor, ATB Financial and public donations.

"The show costs approximately $50,000, said city spokeswoman Julie Stormer, but the city spends three times more ensuring people get in and out of the valley safely. Additional police, fire, transit and road crews are brought in for the event, while routes like River Valley Road close. To make it easier, the city encourages people to take transit to find viewpoints like the legislature grounds, Victoria Park, Louise McKinney Park, Ezio Faraone Park, Government House Park and Dantzer's Hill"

"David Mowat, co-chair of the Light the Bridge Committee, said there will be a three-minute light show synchronized to a recording of O Canada performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and broadcast on CKUA. The bridge lights will stay on after the fireworks.

"Putting the two together, it will be quite a spectacular display," said Mowat. "People will see 60,000 lights that can change in an instant."

Brad Dezotell, owner of Fireworks Spectaculars, said the fireworks show to follow is likely the biggest show west of Ottawa. On Monday, Dezotell showed off the assortment of lift charges, shells and tubes used to effects. The big guns — put in 30 cm-diameter tubes, lodged in a waste bin filled more than a metre deep with gravel — can reach heights of 350 metres in plumes of widths of nearly 300 metres. The names of the fireworks — Triple Crackling Rain, Red Magnesium Spider, Aqua and Twilight Glittering Peony — can only give a hint of what people will see.

"It's just a fantastic traditional fireworks show," said Dezotell. "Lots of red and white to open and a little special moment with the bridge." - Edmonton Journal
