This week's Ask Lee question comes from Timothy O'Reilly in Sacramento, California.

QUESTION: Timothy writes: Lee, I 'm tired of being out of shape, and I'm ready to turn my belly into a six pack. How do I turn all this fat into muscle?

ANSWER: Timothy, your question is a good one, and lies at the root of an old misconception that you can turn fat into muscle. You can't turn fat into muscle, any more than you can turn muscle into fat. But the good news is, that you CAN burn your fat off, while building the underlying muscle at the same time. This will help you to get the tighter, more defined midsection that you're after.

Here's some things to keep in mind...
Fat is made up of stored triglycerides, and is essentially an energy store for the body. Fat has no ability to contract like muscle tissue does. In other words you can't flex fat!

Muscle, on the other hand, is contractile tissue, which has the ability to generate power, and created movement.

Your goal will be to burn off all of the unwanted fat, including that fat on your belly, while building the underlying muscle tissue of the abs so that they can be seen and appreciated by you and others.

To burn body fat you must burn more calories each day than you eat in your meals. Calories are burned continuously by your body whether you're sleeping or exercising. However, the greater the exertion, the greater the amount of calories burned.

Muscle burns lots of calories, whether it's at rest or being exercised. The more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you will burn. That's why it's beneficial to build as much muscle as possible. The more muscle you build, the more likely you are to burn off that unwanted fat at the same time.

You can achieve both fat burning and muscle building with the right nutrition and training program. Check out my free videos on nutrition and training, and also be sure to check out my book, the lean body promise for a complete program that will help you reach your goals.
