Here's where you can ask.. http://www.labrada.com/asklee This week's ask Lee question comes from Tom Long in Dallas Texas. QUESTION: Lee, I 'm in my 60's , and haven't exercised in years. I was an athlete in college but it's been years since I've worked out. Is it too late for me to start again now and get into shape? ANSWER: Tom, the answered to your question is you are never too late to start exercising. In fact, research shows that exercise has an overwhelmingly beneficial effect on the bodies of older people. The benefits include increases in bone density, improvements in cardiovascular health, and reversal of sarcopenia, which is a just a fancy term for age-related muscle loss. The best exercise for this is weight training, which yields positive results in reversing almost every marker of aging. That being said, if you haven't been active for long time, it's important to start out with a low level of effort, and then work your way up slowly. Before hitting the gym, get a thorough check up from your doctor, so that you'll know everything is in order and you can start exercising. I would advise you to start out with walking on the treadmill or swimming, to gradually build up your endurance, before graduating into lifting weights in the gym. Once you do start lifting in the gym, stick with machine exercises at first and use light weights. Don't overdo it, so that you don't get injured. One more thing. With all of the exercise you're going to be doing, you'll want to have a healthy diet also, to help your body recover, and build strength. Be sure to check out my videos on nutrition, and also get a copy of my book, the lean body promise, where you'll find an outstanding nutrition and exercise program to help speed you on your way back into shape. Tom, I hope that clarifies things for you. It's never too late to start exercising and taking better care of yourself. I'm Lee Labrada, your Lean Body coach. Stay lean and stay strong.
