Local Holocaust survivor shares lessons, stories with students in Germany

AMBERLEY VILLAGE, Ohio (WKRC) - A local man who lived through one of history's darkest periods passed along lessons to youngsters halfway across the world, and technology gave him a helping hand.

Holocaust survivor Hugo Eichelberg used an iPad to Skype with students in Hamburg, Germany, from his home in Amberley Village. The 88- year-old was born in Hamburg and attended the same school when he was a boy.

Eichelberg spoke to the students about the upcoming 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the "Night of the Broken Glass."

In November of 1938, Jewish homes, businesses and schools were ransacked, synagogues were burned and authorities did nothing.

Eichelberg says it is important that witnesses give lessons to young people.

"they need to see a living human being to tell them what happened, and how it affected me," Eichelberg said.

Eichelberg is getting to be a veteran with iPad technology. He graduated from a program that teaches survivors to use email and video chats to stay connected and to share their stories.
