CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Going to sleep may be the new prescription for good health, but there's an important formula for when you should sleep.

A study on sleep released from the journal Scientific Reports says when you sleep may be as critical as how much you sleep. It appears going to bed at about the same time every night could keep both your heart beating and your metabolism working.

For years we've known that too little sleep can raise your blood pressure and possibly your weight. Now it appears that irregular sleep patterns can also raise the risk of weight gain, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

To lower this risk, you not only need enough sleep each night, you need to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. It appears if you don't, you suffer in the body from a hangover feeling or jet-lag feeling.

That feeling may be the result of changes that happen to your metabolism and heart.

This study looked at 2,000 adults and concluded what other studies have also shown: Even on the weekends you shouldn't shift sleep. It appears regular bedtimes are one of the keys to a person's good heart health and good metabolism function.
