12 Nov 2018. This 13-year-old female spayed Japanese Chin coughed a lot for 3 days despite heart medication prescribed by Vet 1. Harsh lung sounds and left heart murmurs on ausculation. Why? 1. Vet 1 had stopped medication to remove water from the lungs as this medication causes the dog to drink and urinate more. So the dog has water in the lungs and cough when sleeping to get rid of the water. She became lethargic. Continue the 3 types of heart medication 2. BLOOD TEST - ANAEMIA. Below normal red blood cells and haemoglobin from blood test results. High platelet count. Red cell count 5 (5.5-8.5), Haemoglobin 11.8 (12-18), Platelets 768 (200-500). 3. To give iron drops and better quality food including chicken liver. Hypoxia due to the lack of sufficient oxygen in the red blood cells can lead to coughing. 4. No running. Confine to small area. FOLLOW UP 2 DAYS AFTER TREATMENT The dog coughs fewer times. Follow up with the vet is necessary for dogs with heart disease.
