CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke may start with a stop at the supermarket. There are no bad veggies, but it appears a few of them might work like a personal prescription to fight heart disease and stroke. A new study explains why that is and the Vascular Team at Tri-Health's Bethesda North Hospital wanted to share some of the early warning signs of stroke. “Facial drooping, weakness in an arm or leg, temporary loss of vision in an eye, those are more severe symptoms that need to be addressed immediately,” said Dr. Brian Kuhn, who is a vascular surgeon that is evaluating those at risk for heart disease or stroke. “We look at the blood vessels with an ultrasound, the ultrasound allows us to look inside the blood vessels to see how much plaque there is, what does it look like, what the severity is, and that can determine if someone needs a surgery or an intervention.” As a surgeon, Dr. Kuhn says his passion is prevention, something that researchers also looked at when it came to vascular disease and stroke risk in the Journal of the American Heart Association. As part of the study, they were looking at a stroke risk factor called the “carotid artery intima media thickness.” They found that women who ate three or more servings of vegetables per day fared better on the test than those who ate two or fewer per day. When reviewing the diets of nearly a thousand women, they found all veggies are good for you, but a few may reign supreme for preventing the problem. They were mainly “cruciferous” vegetables which include broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and cabbage. It appears these have a natural compound in them to help fight heart disease and stroke. It's called sulforaphane and it appears to inhibit inflammation in the body A serving is half a cup cooked or one cup raw. Cooking may actually enhance the nutrients in these veggies.
