The 14-year-old Beagle has a painful lower back. What to do?

30 Jul 2018. The 14-year-old Beagle had difficulty walking normally, as if she has a backache. The Beagle was walked on loose leash to observe her gait and pain in the back. Blood test showed the glucose was very low. An unusual finding as the dog looks normal. Palpation showed pain on the lumbar spinal area. Pain-killer was given. As at August 3, 2018, the happy owner said that the dog was active the next day and is as normal as can be. Physical examination showed pain in the lower back spinal area. I advised no more going up and down the stairs and no long walks (the maid took her for long walks to chat with other maids). The owner did not want X-rays to confirm slipped discs or associated disease.
