Rising Star ferry delay continues, but it could open as early as next week

RISING SUN, Ind. (WKRC)- It's a connection that will drastically shorten commutes for a lot of people, but it's more than a month behind schedule.

The ferry at the Rising Star Casino was supposed to begin service between Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, and Rising Sun, Indiana, in early August, but the gates are locked on both sides of the river to get to the ferry.

The MS Lucky Lady was christened in July, but the ferry has yet to carry any paying customers. It's been a hot topic in Rising Sun.

"They're just waiting for it to open, and it's a waiting game is what a lot of them have felt like, and the people over [in Kentucky] say they would be here more often," Sandy Ochs of the M & S Main Street Diner in Rising Sun said.

Ochs thinks once it does start operating, the ferry will bring even more people to town and the diner. Ochs said a lot of her customers are from Kentucky.

"And they're like, 'Okay, this will cut down [on my travel time]. It won't take me an hour-and-a-half to get there and an hour-and-a-half to get back," Ochs said.

Even though the towns are less than half a mile apart, a GPS system said it will take 54 minutes to get from Rising Sun to Rabbit Hash.

The casino says it could be a couple weeks, but it might be as early as Tuesday.

Bill Knott and his wife drove by to check on the ferry from Walton, Kentucky. He said they’ve been excited since hearing about the ferry.

"We come down. We just take an evening ride every once in a while and we come down and just check and see if it's in operation yet and just enjoy an evening ride out in the country," Knott said.

Once it does start operating, rides will cost $5 per vehicle and a round-trip ticket will be $8.

The ferry will run seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
