Let’s start at the front. The big kidney grill stretches wide, creating a much more distinctive look than the previous-generation Z4.

Depending on your need for speed, either a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder or a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine will be hiding behind that grille. Go for the bigger engine and you can expect zero-to-sixty times clocking in around 4 and a half seconds.

This car is bigger than the old Z4 in nearly every dimension, so you’d expect it to feel pretty roomy on the inside. And while I have plenty of space for my lanky arms, this still doesn’t feel like a big car from behind the wheel. Things should feel a little snugger as I rip through corners, though, because these M Sport seats feature an electro-pneumatic mechanism that tightens the bolsters to give me a nice squeeze and help keep me in place as I take those turns a bit too quickly.

You sharp-eyed sports car fans may have noticed the automatic transmission. A manual transmission will not be offered, but BMW doesn’t expect that to hamper Z4 sales. Expect it to arrive at dealerships in spring 2019, with a starting price close to $50,000.
