Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Excel Pivot Table: New Features and Improvements | MrExcel Podcast.

Welcome to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we're diving into the world of pivot tables in Excel 2010. As many of you know, I believe pivot tables are one of the coolest features in Excel and I could talk about them for hours. However, today we'll be focusing on some of the brand new features in Excel 2010 that make pivot tables even more powerful and user-friendly.

First, let's take a look at the layout of a pivot table. We have our data on one side, and four drop zones on the other: report filter, row labels, column labels, and sum values. In Excel 2010, they introduced a new compact layout, but I personally prefer the old tabular layout from Excel 2003. It's important to have the row labels in separate columns for easy copying and pasting of data. Luckily, Excel 2010 has a feature that allows us to fill in those blank cells that always seemed to be a hassle before. Simply go to the design tab and select "repeat all item labels" to fill in those blanks.

Another great addition in Excel 2010 is the ability to change the calculation of values in a pivot table. Under the "show values as" option, we now have access to some new calculations such as percentage of parent row total and rank. These were previously buried and hard to find, but now they are easily accessible and make analyzing data even easier.

But perhaps the most talked about feature in Excel 2010 pivot tables is the visual filter called a slicer. With a slicer, we can easily filter our data by selecting different options from a list. This makes it much easier to analyze specific data without having to manually filter through the pivot table. And the best part is, the slicer is linked to the pivot table, so any changes made in the slicer will automatically update the pivot table.

There are many more improvements and features in Excel 2010 pivot tables that we could go on about, but these are just a few of the highlights. I've done numerous podcasts on pivot tables in the past, so be sure to check those out for more in-depth discussions. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the MrExcel podcast, and we'll see you next time for more Excel tips and tricks.
